David L. Schutte is the 3rd generation providing funeral services to the Postville and Clermont areas and following his grandfather, Louis Schutte: his father, Willard Schutte and his uncle, Paul Schutte. Dave graduated from Postville High School in 1956, attended Iowa State University majoring in Industrial Engineering and graduated from Worshams College of Mortuary Science in 1960. He received his Iowa Funeral Directors license in 1961 and his Wisconsin Funeral Directors License five years later.
Dave was united in marriage to Karen Rekow in 1959 and began working in the family business. On May 1, 1969, Dave and Karen purchased the funeral business from Louis Schutte & Sons Inc. and operated the business as a team with Dave taking care of the technical part and Karen providing the support services. The Postville funeral home was redecorated and remodeled several times and a chapel was added at Clermont. The couple provided their first cremation service in June of 1969.
On January 1, 2009 Karen and Dave began their retirement by merging with Joshua Grau of Elkader into Grau Funeral Homes & Cremation Services and both continue to work part time as needed. Currently Karen and Dave, along with Robert Reierson operate a mortuary transport service providing funeral coaches and transport services for the Grau operation along with other funeral service providers in northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin.
Dave & Karen are the parents of three children: Jim, Diane & Sara: nine
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
