Norbert Dettman, 95, of Luana, Iowa died Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, Iowa. Norbert was born on February 24, 1922 to Walter and Martha (Milewsky) Dettman in Garnavillo, Iowa. He graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1940.
Norbert met Millie when they were kids, living in the same neighborhood. As they grew older, they would meet at dances and danced at Lakeside, barn dances and Osterdock. They were united in marriage on August 24, 1943 at St. John Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, Iowa. Three sons were born to this union, Harlan, Owen and Marlin. They farmed south of Luana from 1944-1967. Norbert also was a dozer operator and worked for Krambeer Construction and Handke Construction and retired at the age of 75. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, smoking meat and drinking dark beer. Most of all, Norbert loved spending time with his family.
Norbert is survived by his three sons; Harlan (Karla) Dettman, Owen (Twila) Dettman and Marlin (Bridget) Dettman all of McGregor; nine grandchildren, Aaron, Katy, Connie, Marti, Heidi, Jake, Jordon, Colton and Keaton and seven great-grandchildren.
Norbert was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Dettman on July 25, 2014; his parents, Walter and Martha Dettman; and one sister, Dorothy (Delos) Schroeder.
Visitation will be Monday, August 21, 2017 from 9-11 am at St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am on Monday August 21, 2017 at St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, Iowa with Rev. Harold McMillin as the Officiant.
Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Luana, Iowa.
