Dean Orville Gunderson, 86, of Postville, Iowa died Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Dean Orville was born June 12, 1931 to Ralph and Alma (Christianson) Gunderson in rural St. Olaf, Iowa, He was baptized on July 19, 1931 at Norway Lutheran Church in St. Olaf, Iowa and confirmed on March 25, 1945 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. Dean attended rural school in Clayton County and Postville Community School, graduating from Postville High School in 1949.

Dean was united in marriage to Clarian Thelma Thompson on August 12, 1951 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. Five children were born to this union. Dean and Clarian spent their married life on a farm near Postville, Iowa until moving to Postville in August, 1997.

Dean enjoyed helping on the farm even after moving to Postville. He also enjoyed being with family and friends, playing cards, playing pool, gardening, and was an enthusiastic sports fan. Dean served on the Gunder Cheese Factory Board as well as various committees and church council at St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he was an active member.

Dean is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Clarian; five children, Marsha (Reid) Koenig of Waverly, Iowa, Randall Gunderson of Decorah, Iowa, Alan (Kathy) Gunderson of Postville, Iowa, Carol (Jeff) Reierson of Elgin, Iowa and Deanna (Dave) Hahn of Rochester, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Anne Koenig of San Diego, California, Laura Koenig of Winona, Minnesota, Jennifer (Dave) Braham of Austin, Texas, Kristen Reierson of Waukon, Iowa, Sara Reierson of Elgin, Iowa and Leah Reierson of Iowa City, Iowa; two great-grandchildren, Micah and Oliver Braham of Austin, Texas; sister, Betty Holm of Waverly, Iowa; sister-in-law, Kay Gunderson of Postville, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Alma Gunderson; two brothers, Arnold Gunderson and Ralph Gunderson; three sisters, Ruby Torkelson, Doris Niedert and Fern Templeton; brothers-in-law, Quentin Torkelson, Lloyd Niedert, Bernard Templeton, Duane Holm, Harley Thompson and Harold Richert; and sisters-in-law, Jan Gunderson, Ellen Thompson and Lavanda Richert.

Visitation will be held from 9-11 am on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa with Rev. Lynn Noel as the Officiant.

Burial will be held at a later date.
