Margaret M. “Marge” Halverson, 91 of Lansing died Friday April 27, 2018 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Margaret Halverson was born April 29, 1926 at Lansing, Iowa to William and Gertrude (Strub) Troendle. Marge received her education in the Lansing area, attending a country school on Faegre Prairie Road and Immaculate Conception School. She lived all of her life in the Lansing area where she farmed, bartended and worked as a nurse’s aide at Thornton Manor. In 1943 Marge married Raymond Hammell and married Wendell Halverson in 1978.
She is survived by her children, Kenneth (Hazel) Hammell of Wapello, Iowa, Carolyn (Steven) Thorsten of Lansing, Dorothy (Tom) Schwartzhoff of Lansing, Shirley (Mike) Fink of New Albin, Kathryn (Joe) Colvin of Ft. Scott, Kansas, Mark (Renee) Hammell of Dorchester, Mary (Craig) Sand of Lansing, Elizabeth (Timothy) Fish of Waukon, Gerald (Deb) Hammell of La Crosse; two daughters-in-law, Margaret Hammell of Lacrosse and Cindy Hammell of Lansing; thirty-two grandchildren; sixty-six great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Troendle of Phoenix, Carol Schaefer of Lansing, Mary Troendle of Waukon, Shirley (Jay) Sherburne of Viroqua, Margaret Blake of Dorchester, Walter and Betty Hammell of Caledonia; two step children, Larry (Sonja) Halverson and Janet (Bill Aassen) both of Viroqua.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; three children, Cornelius Hammell, Virginia Hammell, Roger Hammell; two granddaughters, Theresa Hammell and Catherine Sand; three brothers, Cletus, Irvin, and William Jr. Troendle; and four sons-in-law, Thomas Schwartzhoff, Bill Erickson, Joseph Colvin and Vernon Kukes.
Margaret Halverson was truly a pillar of love and faith for her family who adored her. Those who knew her, know that she was a woman who was all at once strong and tender, whose blue eyes sparkled when she laughed. Margaret’s nature was that of a caregiver and until the day she passed, she continued to care deeply for those around her.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 am on Wednesday May 2, 2018 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing, Iowa with Rev. John Moser as the Celebrant.
Friends may call on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 from 4-7 pm at the Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Lansing, Iowa where there will be a 4:00 pm Scripture Service.
Interment will be at Gethsemane Cemetery in Lansing, Iowa.
