Barbara Jean Drahos, 88, of Postville, Iowa died Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at Gundersen Hospital in LaCrosse surrounded by her daughter and a caring medical staff.\u00a0 Barbara was born July 3, 1935 to Lois (Kulper) Backes and Ernest Carl Backes.\u00a0 Barbara grew up in Guttenberg, Iowa and enjoyed time at her Grandfather\u2019s farm.<\/p>\n
After graduating from high school Barbara went to business school and worked in Cedar Rapids.\u00a0 On June 5, 1956, Barbara was united in marriage to John Phillip Drahos.\u00a0 To that union one daughter was born, Christina Marie Drahos.<\/p>\n
Barbara and her husband moved to Postville in 1971 and purchased the Coast to Coast Store which later grew into John\u2019s Hardware and John\u2019s Appliance.\u00a0 Barbara enjoyed doing the accounting work and through the years taught her daughter to also love accounting.\u00a0 Barbara was active in the Postville Chamber of Commerce and enjoyed running a small business for over 50 years, cooking, and exercising.\u00a0 Later in life she enjoyed her house cats.<\/p>\n
Surviving Barbara is her daughter, Christina Drahos (Tony Schager) of Postville, Iowa, step-grand-children Callie Schager of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Chance Schager of Chicago, Illinois, and several nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, John Drahos, and parents Lois Backes and Ernest Carl Backes.<\/p>\n
She had requested no wake or funeral with a private burial at a later date.<\/p>\n
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Bridget\u2019s Catholic Church in Postville or Lull\u2019s Park Nature Trail in care of the City of Postville.<\/p>\n
