{"id":15743,"date":"2024-02-05T14:14:34","date_gmt":"2024-02-05T20:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/?p=15743"},"modified":"2024-03-01T08:28:39","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T14:28:39","slug":"marjorie-drahn-monona-iowa-january-23-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/2024\/02\/marjorie-drahn-monona-iowa-january-23-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Marjorie Drahn, Monona, Iowa, January 23, 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15802 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drahn-Marge-news-pic-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drahn-Marge-news-pic-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drahn-Marge-news-pic-400x557.jpg 400w, https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drahn-Marge-news-pic-250x348.jpg 250w, https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drahn-Marge-news-pic-68x95.jpg 68w, https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drahn-Marge-news-pic.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/>Marjorie Charlotte Otis Drahn, 95, of Monona, Iowa died Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.\u00a0 She was born January 15, 1929 in Morgan Park, Illinois to parents Selwyn and Charlotte Otis.\u00a0 She was the first of three children.\u00a0 She graduated from Earlville High School and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, receiving a Teaching Certificate.<\/p>\n<p>She then taught for one year in Washington, Iowa.\u00a0 At this point, Marjorie joined her family in Salzburg, Austria.\u00a0 For the next four years she taught for the United States Army in the years following World War 2.\u00a0 While cementing her teaching skills, Marjorie also developed a love of international travel at this time of her life.<\/p>\n<p>Upon Marjorie\u2019s return to the United States, she completed her bachelor\u2019s degree in Education from Iowa State Teachers College.\u00a0 She would then teach one year in the Demonstration School of the University of Iowa, Iowa City.\u00a0 During this year, she met Lloyd Drahn in her grandparent\u2019s yard in Monona, Iowa.\u00a0 By the next summer on August 8, 1954, they were wed.\u00a0 To this union, three children were born.<\/p>\n<p>Marjorie would teach in the Monona school system until her retirement in 1994.\u00a0 Marjorie and Lloyd supported each other in their respective careers; teaching and farming.\u00a0 Lloyd drove Marjorie to school on bad roads and enjoyed visiting her classrooms far more than Marjorie enjoyed helping with farm chores.\u00a0 In 1994, they sold the farm and moved into Monona.<\/p>\n<p>Marjorie was active in community affairs.\u00a0 She was the great, great granddaughter of Phineas Page Olmsted, first white settler and founder of the town of Monona.\u00a0 She was a member of St. Paul\u2019s Lutheran Church in Monona, a member and a President of The Federated Women\u2019s Club of Monona, and served on the Boards of the Monona Historical Society and Murphy Helwig Library.\u00a0 She enjoyed reading, quilting, and playing cards.\u00a0 She connected with many people through these activities.<\/p>\n<p>Marjorie traveled extensively, visiting six continents.\u00a0 She combined her love of game-playing, teaching, travel, and her grandchildren in one beloved event.\u00a0 Marjorie would plan an Easter Treasure Hunt with clues for the grandchildren. \u00a0 As the children got older, the clues became more complex and often related to Marjorie\u2019s travels.\u00a0 The tradition culminated in an Easter basket and continued for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and brothers Gilbert and William Otis.<\/p>\n<p>Marjorie is survived by three children: Cindy (Gary) Dostal of Muskego, Wisconsin; Chris (Pat) Drahn of Arden Hills, Minnesota; and Sally (Alan) Miller of Boone, Iowa;\u00a0 five grandchildren:\u00a0 Andrew Dostal of Waterloo, Iowa; Tim (Jennifer Lehmann) Drahn of Arlington, Massachusetts; Katie (Patrick) Gleason of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; Cory Miller of Ames, Iowa; and Jacob (Kylee) Miller of Ames, Iowa; six great grandchildren: Lucas, Jack and Grady Lehmann-Drahn, Wesley and Connor Gleason, and Jessica Miller.<\/p>\n<p>Memorials may be sent to Murphy Helwig Library, Monona, Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>A Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Friday, March 1, 2024<\/span> <\/strong>at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Monona, Iowa<\/p>\n<p>Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Saturday, March 2, 2024<\/span><\/strong> at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa with Rev.
