{"id":2510,"date":"2017-02-28T13:27:50","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T19:27:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/?p=2510"},"modified":"2017-03-01T20:12:22","modified_gmt":"2017-03-02T02:12:22","slug":"helen-seeland-elkader-iowa-february-28-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/2017\/02\/helen-seeland-elkader-iowa-february-28-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Helen Seeland, Elkader, Iowa, February 28, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2513 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Helen-black-and-white.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Helen-black-and-white.jpg 80w, https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Helen-black-and-white-68x107.jpg 68w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 80px) 100vw, 80px\" \/>Helen Seeland<\/strong> of rural Elkader passed away on February 28, 2017.\u00a0 Helen was born on June 23, 1921, to Charles and Anna Nichols in Elkader where she attended and graduated from the public schools.\u00a0 On May 31, 1940, she married Harold Seeland at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.\u00a0 While raising five children, she was actively involved with the work on the family farm. Cooking and baking for her family and others were life-long pleasures for her.\u00a0 Often her cooking and baking used fruits and vegetables from the big garden she enjoyed cultivating.<\/p>\n<p>Helen was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church and served on a variety of church boards including as vice president and president of the Decorah Conference of Women.\u00a0 She passed on her love of reading by serving as a \u201cbook buddy\u201d, reading to young students in the schools.\u00a0 Her strong belief in helping others made her active in the Elkader Lions Club where she served as president.\u00a0 While Harold watched Cubs games or other sports events, Helen left a legacy of crocheted afghans and doilies for her family and friends.\u00a0 She relished summer trips, traveling the United States and ultimately getting to all states except Alaska.\u00a0 However, if you asked Helen her favorite pastime, she would tell you taking care of and spending time with her grandsons brought her great joy. Helen was born one year after women were given the right to vote and was thrilled to be able to vote for a woman as president of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Lawrence Nichols; her sister, Marion (Bob) Pries, sister, Marguerite (Herman) Fascher; her husband, and her daughter, Joann Millard.<\/p>\n<p>She is survived by daughters, Jan (Lynn) Reinicke, Jean Seeland, Joyce (James) Larson; son, Charlie (Kari) Seeland; son-in-law, Gary Millard; grandsons, Andy and Tommy Seeland and her cat Spanky.<\/p>\n<p><em>In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Bethany Lutheran Church or the Elkader Public Library.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Visitation<\/strong>: 3 to 6 PM Thursday, March 2, 2017, at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home in Elkader and one hour before services at the church on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Funeral Service<\/strong>: 10:30 AM Friday, March 3, 2017, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interment<\/strong>: East Side Cemetery, Elkader<\/p>\n<p>Leonard-Grau Funeral Home &amp; Cremation Service is assisting the family.
