Svendsen, 85, of Castalia, Iowa died Wednesday, August 9, 2017<\/strong> at St. Mary\u2019s Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.\u00a0 John Edward, the son of Johannes \u201cJohn\u201d and Anna (Mikkelson) Svendsen, was born September 25, 1931 at his home in Winneshiek County, Iowa. He was baptized at Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, Iowa and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, Iowa.\u00a0 He went to school at Bloomfield Township School #8 and graduated from Postville High School in 1949.\u00a0 While in high school he lettered in track and instrumental music.\u00a0 John helped his dad with the family farm and worked for Kneeskern\u2019s Mink Farm after graduation.\u00a0 He entered the United States Navy in March of 1956 and was honorably discharged in October of 1957. He then worked for Anundsen Publishing Company in Decorah, Iowa from 1958 until his retirement in the early 2000\u2019s. John was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. He enjoyed dancing, was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and enjoyed socializing with family and friends.\u00a0 In his younger days, John was a pitcher on the Castalia Softball Team.<\/p>\n<p>John is survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Svendsen of Castalia; many nieces and nephews; many great nieces and great nephews; and many great-great nieces and great-great nephews.<\/p>\n<p>John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna; four brothers, John, who died in infancy, Arthur, Norman, and Reuben Svendsen; and five sisters, Mildred Breitsprecher, Esther Svendsen, Lillie Zweibohmer, Arlette Bachelder, and Ellen Thompson; plus other family members.<\/p>\n<p>Visitation will be 9-11 am, Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral Services will be 11:00 am, Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, Iowa with Rev. Alan Wicks as the officiant.<\/p>\n<p>Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia, Iowa with military rites.<\/p>\n<p>Schutte- Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, Iowa is helping the family with arrangements.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 John E.
