{"id":5654,"date":"2018-07-26T08:50:27","date_gmt":"2018-07-26T13:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/?p=5654"},"modified":"2018-08-16T08:28:36","modified_gmt":"2018-08-16T13:28:36","slug":"lloyd-drahn-july-26-2018-monona-iowa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/2018\/07\/lloyd-drahn-july-26-2018-monona-iowa\/","title":{"rendered":"Lloyd Drahn, Monona, Iowa, July 26, 2018,"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-small_image wp-image-5688 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Drahn-Lloyd-news-pic-250x347.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Drahn-Lloyd-news-pic-250x347.jpg 250w, https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Drahn-Lloyd-news-pic-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Drahn-Lloyd-news-pic-768x1066.jpg 768w, https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Drahn-Lloyd-news-pic-738x1024.jpg 738w, https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Drahn-Lloyd-news-pic-750x1041.jpg 750w, https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Drahn-Lloyd-news-pic-400x555.jpg 400w, https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Drahn-Lloyd-news-pic-68x94.jpg 68w, https:\/\/graufuneralhomes.com\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Drahn-Lloyd-news-pic.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Lloyd Carl Ernest Drahn, 100, of Monona, Iowa died July 26, 2018 at Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa.\u00a0 He was born March 27, 1918 on the family farm near Froelich, Iowa to parents Fred and Emilie Kaiser Drahn.\u00a0 He was the ninth of eleven children and his mother stated he was the only one to wait for the doctor to arrive for delivery.\u00a0 Thus began a lifelong love of farming and stewardship of land and farm animals.\u00a0 Lloyd was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona.\u00a0 He attended the Drahn Country School and graduated from Monona High School in 1935.\u00a0 This education began a love of reading and poetry in particular.\u00a0 Lloyd would be referred to as a \u201cfarmer poet\u201d and was known to recite poetry from those days until the end of his life.<\/p>\n<p>After high school, Lloyd farmed with his father until World War II called him to a life changing journey in Europe.\u00a0 Lloyd volunteered for the Army and served with the 83<sup>rd<\/sup> Chemical Mortar Battalion, Company C.\u00a0 As with many of the \u201cGreatest Generation\u201d this experience would be a pivotal life event.\u00a0 Lloyd served in the European theater during 1944 and 45.\u00a0 He was the recipient of four bronze stars and one bronze arrowhead for having gone through four major campaigns and the Anzio Beach Invasion.\u00a0 Lloyd journeyed through Italy and France and finished the war in Germany.\u00a0 There, as a German American, he pondered the role of the German people in that horrible war and spoke with the German people often in an attempt to build bridges of communication and understanding.<\/p>\n<p>After the war Lloyd attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago and became an electrician.\u00a0 He would combine \u201cwiring\u201d and farming for many years.\u00a0 While there Lloyd worked at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago.\u00a0 For the rest of his life, he would be an exceptional help and \u201cnurse\u201d to those who were not feeling well.<\/p>\n<p>On August 8, 1954 Lloyd was united in marriage with Marjorie Charlotte Otis at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona.\u00a0 To this union three children were born.\u00a0 The couple farmed in the Monona-Farmersburg area until retiring to Monona in 1994.\u00a0 Marjorie was a teacher and Lloyd supported her efforts by driving her on icy roads and visiting her classrooms for \u201cstory time.\u201d\u00a0 Lloyd was a loving husband, father and grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>Lloyd loved to work on his farm and care for his dairy cattle.\u00a0 He had a bit of spare time to play softball, town team baseball, golf, cards, read, travel, do crossword puzzles, follow the Twins and Vikings, and participate in the American Legion and AMVETS. Lloyd has been a member of Lutheran Churches in Monona and Farmersburg all his life.\u00a0 He spent several years teaching Sunday School, volunteering at the Monona Butterfly Garden, and serving on the board of the Monona Historical Society.<\/p>\n<p>Lloyd is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Monona, Iowa; three children; Cindy (Gary) Dostal of Muskego, Wisconsin; Chris (Pat) Drahn of Arden Hills, Minnesota; and Sally (Alan) Miller of Boone, Iowa; five grandchildren;\u00a0 Andrew Dostal of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Tim (Jennifer Lehmann) Drahn of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Katie (Patrick) Gleason of Golden Valley, Minnesota, Cory Miller and Jacob Miller both of Boone, Iowa; one sister:\u00a0 Aloha Drahn of Downer\u2019s Grove, Illinois. and many nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n<p>Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Walter Drahn, Irwin Drahn, Glendor Drahn, Elwin Drahn, and Everett Drahn; sisters:\u00a0 Edna Henkes, Laura Nugent, Sophia Lange, and Eileen McWhorter.<\/p>\n<p>Visitation will be Friday, August 17, 2018 from 4-7 pm at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am on Saturday August 18, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, Iowa with Rev.
