Boom, 96, of Prairie du Chien passed away Sunday, June 16, 2019 at Crossing Rivers Health Center in Prairie du Chien.\u00a0 Hazel, daughter of LeRoy and Vivian (Kramer) Schwenn, was born April 19, 1923 on a farm north of Madison near Morrisonville, Columbia County, Wisconsin.\u00a0 Hazel graduated from West High School in Madison, Wisconsin in June of 1941.\u00a0 After her graduation she moved to Eastman, Wisconsin and worked part time at the telephone office.\u00a0 Hazel was united in marriage with Daniel Boom on November 1, 1942. To this union three children, Rodney, Roger, and Esther were born.<\/p>\n<p>Hazel started operating the Eastman telephone switchboard in April of 1948. After the telephone office closed in August of 1959, Dan and Hazel moved to Prairie du Chien where Hazel started working in the telephone office. After the office closed in 1969, Hazel commuted to Dodgeville, Wisconsin for six and a half years before retiring from the telephone company in 1975.\u00a0 She then worked at the Farrell Clinic until April of 1988.<\/p>\n<p>Hazel\u2019s main hobby was quilting.\u00a0 She made many, many quilts for her family and for church fund raisers.\u00a0 She also enjoyed her games of scrabble with Renee.<\/p>\n<p>Hazel is survived by her sons, Rodney (Charlene) Boom of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin and Roger (Ellen) Boom of Eastman, Wisconsin; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-two years, Dan, who died in 2005; her beautiful daughter, Esther Kay Steiber Whitney, in 1993; her parents, LeRoy and Vivian; a sister, Viola Bartels; and a brother, Lee Schwenn.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, June 20, 2019 at the Prairie du Chien United Methodist Church in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Rev. Barb Cook and Rev. Lynn Schreck will be the officiants.<\/p>\n<p>Friends may call on Thursday from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at the church.<\/p>\n<p>Internment will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin following the service,<\/p>\n<p>In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial be made to the Prairie du Chien United Methodist Church<\/p>\n<p>Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family with arrangements.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hazel S.
