John “Jack” Schultz, McGregor, Iowa, January 8, 2021

John “Jack” Walter Schultz, 91, of McGregor, Iowa died Friday, January 8, 2021 at Mayo Health in La Crosse, Wisconsin.  John was born June 1, 1929 to Benjamin Albert and Meda Marie (Zahn) Schultz in McGregor, Iowa. He was baptized on June 8, 1930 and attended McGregor Public School.

Jack was united in marriage, with the love of his life, Barbara LaVonne Huff on August 1, 1953 in McGregor, Iowa. He was known to say, “If you’ve had a good wife, a good dog and a good gun, then you’ve had a good life, and I’ve had a very good life”. In his early years, Jack worked on the family farm, on a section crew for the railroad, and hauled eggs for Dayton Dyke. In 1956, Jack went to work at Yellow River State Forest for the Iowa Conservation Commission. He was a foreman for the forestry division, running the sawmill, logging and planting trees, fencing state lands, and working with inmates from Luster Heights, until his retirement in 1991. During 1970-1975 John, along with his family, operated the A&J Trail Rides just outside of McGregor near Pikes Peak.

Jack loved being in the outdoors working in the timber, and he loved to hunt and fish. He also loved to eat, especially Blue Gills, and he enjoyed many fish fries with family and friends. He also enjoyed being at Pikes Peak, where he and Barb operated the concession stand for 25 years. Jack spent a lot of time talking to the folks that stopped by and delivering firewood to campers. He always had a joke or funny story to tell and made many lasting friendships. He spent many happy hours playing cards with his family and friends and also enjoyed talking on the phone. He was friendly and outgoing. Jack will be truly missed.

Surviving Jack are his children, Andrew (Mary) Schultz of McGregor, Iowa and Jacalyn Schultz-Sloan (Michael Sloan) of McGregor, Iowa; nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, (with one more on the way), and sister, Virginia Faktor, of Centennial, Colorado, and many nieces and nephews.
