Schmitz Funeral Home was established in 1936 by Philip and Florence Schmitz, when they purchased the Fleischer-Helwig Furniture and Undertaking in Ossian. In 1964, Philip and Florence purchased the Otto Lee residence at 125 W. Main St. in Ossian and remodeled it into a funeral home.
After Philip died in 1973, their son, Kenneth Schmitz and his wife, Jane, returned to Ossian to assist Florence with the furniture store and funeral home. They later purchased the business from Florence and operated it until 1990, when the business was acquired by Philip and Florence’s son and daughters, Karl Schmitz Sr., Karen (Schmitz) Hemesath and Mary Lou (Schmitz) Uhlenhake. In 2001 Don Conway purchased the funeral home from Karl, Karen and Mary Lou and continued operating the Schmitz Funeral Home until his retirement.
In 2011, Joshua and Annette Grau purchased the Schmitz - Grau Funeral Home from Don Conway. They are looking forward to continuing quality and caring service that was established by the Schmitz family.
