Norma Herreid, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, July 4, 2017

Norma Jean Herreid, 86, of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at Crossing Rivers Health, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Norma was born on July 31, 1930 to Elmer and Hulda (Kliefoth) Kurth in Farmersburg, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, Iowa, where German was spoken. Norma grew up on the farm built by her grandfather, next to Roberts Creek in Luana, Iowa. She graduated from Elkader High School, after graduation Norma moved to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin to attend nursing school at the Old General Hospital and resided in the nurse’s dorm next door.

It was in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin that she met William Herreid, Sr. at Luther League. They were united in marriage on March 21, 1951. As a young mother she was active with St. Peter Lutheran Church, loved to cook and always kept an extensive garden. As her children grew, she joined her husband running The Prairie Tool Co., The Homesteader Community and Homesteader Homes. Norma belonged to a weekly coffee group for almost sixty years, these ladies are her dearest friends. In retirement, she made up for all the reading she missed as a working woman, voraciously reading twenty books a month, in addition to cooking and baking for her family, until weeks before her death.

Norma is survived by her children, Joyce Hagen of rural Wauzeka, Wisconsin, William (Sandra) Herreid, Jr. of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin and Thomas (Virginia) Herreid of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Matt (Bethany) Hagen of Baraboo, Wisconsin, Amanda (Jeremy) Oldenberg of Luana, Iowa, Ashley Herreid of Eastman, Wisconsin, Hannah Herreid  and Tara Herreid of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin and Brianna Herreid of Madison, Wisconsin and great-grandchildren, MaKehnna Oldenberg, Montanna Oldenberg and Mercedes Herreid.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband, William Herreid, Sr.; teenage daughter, Barbara Herreid; parents, Elmer and Hulda Kurth; and siblings, Calvin and Glen Kurth and Inez Lenth.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given.

Memorial Services will be at 12:00 pm on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin with a visitation one hour before services at the church on Sunday. Pastor Joe Irvin and Pastor Kyle Svenungsen will be the Officiants.

Inurnment will follow the services at Evergreen Cemetery, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.
