Harley Glawe, St. Olaf, Iowa, August 31, 2017

Harley Glawe, 90, of rural St. Olaf, died Thursday, August 31, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. Harley Carl Henry Glawe, son of Herman and Louisa (Polkow) Glawe was born September 17, 1926, in Boardman Township, rural Elkader.  He was raised and educated in Clayton County, attending Pony Hollow School. He wanted his children to go to college because he didn’t get to graduate from high school

He was united in marriage to Irma Morley on December 12, 1948, at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church, Garber. Four children were born to this union. Together, Harley and Irma farmed north of Elkader until they retired and moved to assisted living in Elkader in 2014. The farm is now a Century Farm.

Harley was baptized and confirmed at the Frieden’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Elkader. He served for 23 years as a Co-op board director in Elkader, served two terms as a Boardman Township Trustee, and was president of the St. Olaf Conservation Club for three years. Harley was a jokester. Loved to make people laugh. He loved a good joke. He had many friends throughout his lifetime – he was a genuine Happy Guy! Harley was a very good father to his children and his twin brother’s children (his brother died at age 39).

He will be remembered as a person who enjoyed life in many ways, family gatherings, dancing and socializing, joking with anyone who would listen and solitary walks on the farm. A kind person.

Survivors include his wife, Irma, of Elkader; his children, Dennis (Cindy Sue) Glawe of Pickwick, MN, Teresa (Richard) Sass of St. Olaf, Vicki (Kevin) Bentien of Monona and Reed (Mary) Glawe of New Ulm, MN; twelve grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Johnson of Elkader; one sister-in-law, Bernice Kobler of Omaha, NE.

Harley was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Clarence in infancy, Edwin and his twin, Harold; four sisters, Rosina Fette, Mabel Theise, Hattie Lembke, and Amanda Ihde.

Visitation will be 1 to 5 pm on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Elkader, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before services at the church on Monday.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 am on Monday, September 4, 2017, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, Iowa.
