Gladys Hackmann, Elgin, Iowa, October 15, 2017

Gladys Hackmann, 100, of West Union, Iowa died, Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Maple Crest Manor, Fayette, Iowa. Gladys May Yearous was born on March 25, 1917 to Jacob and Ethel (Voshel) Yearous in Elgin, Iowa. Because of the untimely death of her mother, Gladys was lovingly cared for by her paternal grandparents, Jacob Sr. and Rebecca Yearous until her marriage. She attended rural schools and graduated from Elgin High School in 1934. Gladys received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College and taught four years in rural schools.

Gladys received Christ as her personal savior and was baptized and became a member of the First Baptist Church at the age of fifteen years old, where she served faithfully as long as health permitted. Gladys was united in marriage with Hugo Hackmann on June 4, 1940.  At Elgin Baptist Church, Gladys taught Sunday school and Bible School and was a member of the Tabitha Society. She enjoyed sewing, reading and entertaining her relatives and friends in her home.  She was a farm wife and homemaker and also worked as a secretary at the law office of Traeger and Koempel in West Union, Iowa for about twenty-five years.

Gladys is survived by her children, Rachel Munger of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Stanley (Dianne) Hackmann of Elgin, Iowa and Mark Hackmann of Tempe, Arizona; three grandchildren, Paul Hackmann, Nathaniel (Nicole) Hackmann and Shawn Munger; one great-grandson, Alex Hackmann; one half-brother, Charles (Charlotte) Yearous of LeClaire, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-eight years; mother, Ethel Yearous; her father, Jacob Jr. and step-mother, Bertha (Medberry); brother, Cornelius Yearous; half-sister, Juanita Guinn; half-brother, Jerome Yearous; son-in-law, Ted Munger; and grandson, Christopher Munger.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elgin, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Friday.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am, on Friday, October 20, 2017 at First Baptist Church, Elgin, Iowa (new location, 22526 Canoe Road) with Rev. Lee Boleyn as the Officiant.

Burial will follow at Elgin Cemetery, Elgin, Iowa.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church and the West Union Library.
