Paul A. Schneider, Elkader, Iowa, March 30, 2018

Paul A. Schneider, 87 of Elkader died Friday March 30th, 2018, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.  Mass of Christian burial will be at St. Joseph’s Church in Elkader where Paul spent many hours remodeling and updating various areas of the Church, Parish Hall, and Convent. This was a labor of love for Paul as his father and uncles performed all the woodwork when the original church was built in 1898.

Paul Alfred Schneider was born October 22, 1930 at Elkader, Iowa. He was the son of Victor and Paula Daugs Schneider. Paul was a 1949 graduate of Elkader High School where he excelled at athletics winning 44 straight football games. He then attended Iowa State University before enlisting in the US Air Force and served his country in Japan during the Korean war. In 1957 he married Mary “Jean” Havertape in Masonville, Iowa. To this union five children were born, Susan, Daniel, Ann, John and Timothy. After Jean died in 1980 he married Deanna Jo Hoth at St. Joseph’s Church in Elkader in 1985. After Dee’s passing, he married Sara Larson in Williamston, MI.

Paul took over Schneider Construction Co. from his father and continued the tradition of building quality homes, farm buildings, and commercial buildings in Elkader until 1982.  He then became a Superintendent for Larson Construction of Independence, Iowa.  Paul retired in 2002 and spent many retirement hours working in his woodshop constructing solid wood furniture.  His many treasures can be found among his children, grandchildren, and friend’s homes.

He is survived by five children; Susan (Chuck) Hubbard of Manchester, Daniel (Jackie) Schneider of Luana, Ann (Robert) Dover of Norfolk, Nebraska, John (Teresa) Schneider of Hortonville, Wisconsin, Timothy (Pam) Schneider of Van Meter, Iowa; sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Jean and Dee, and two brothers, Victor and William.
