Aloysius “Lloyd” Andrew Welsh, 84, of Lansing, Iowa passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa.
Lloyd was born August 20, 1933 to Patrick & Mary (Zoll) Welsh. He attended French Creek #5 through the eighth grade and attended St. Paul’s Prep Seminary in Epworth, Iowa his freshman and sophomore years. Lloyd graduated from St. Pat’s High School in Waukon in 1951. He served in the Army from 1956-1958 at Fort Lewis in Washington.
On September 6, 1960, Lloyd was united in marriage with Betty Voss at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa by Father William Menster.
Lloyd farmed in the Lycurgus area for five years and then opened the Village Farm & Home store in Lansing in 1965. His commitment to his customers and his community was something he took great pride in. He didn’t think twice when a customer called after-hours needing an urgent item and would drop whatever he was doing to get them what they needed. Through the years he was a member of the Lansing Lions Club, City Council, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters and Jaycees. Lloyd was also a volunteer for the Lansing Fire Department and Police Auxiliary.
Lloyd enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family. In addition to raising fourteen children, Lloyd and Betty hosted four exchange students. He was well known for his sense of humor and antics. He enjoyed meeting new people and especially enjoyed striking up conversations with people he didn’t know. He loved “hearing their story” and often commented to his family about things he found they had in common. He continuously exhibited the importance of treating people with respect and compassion.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Betty; his children Debra of Lansing, Diane (Randy) Ruth of Plainfield, Denise (Tim) Pavlovec of Urbana, Jayme (Gloria) Welsh of Champlin, Minnesota, Dawn (Rich) Kuster of Bunceton, Missouri, Rick (Julie) Welsh of Lansing, Danette (Dwight) Jones of Waukon, Dana Welsh of Lansing, Deanna (Jon) Gerholdt of Plainfield, Danielle (Jason) Howe, Dacia (Jason) Sommer of Waukon, Lance Welsh of Lansing and Destiny Welsh of Des Moines, thirty-seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Bernard, his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Leona Welsh, Esther Welsh, Sarah Welsh, Bob Heffern, Bob Gonsalves, Maralyn Welsh, Bernard (Myra) Voss, Robert (Marcia) Voss, Carol (Fred) Berns, Donald (Mary Pat) Voss.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his son, Andy, in 2009, two grandchildren, his parents Patrick & Mary Welsh, his mother and father-in-law Ben & Leona Voss, his siblings and their spouses Kay and Earl Moore, Robert, Alice and Cliff Armstrong, Mary Lou and Robert Cota, Daniel, Bernadine Heffern, Carolyn Welsh, Ida Gonsalves, Jerry & Jeanne Welsh and four infant siblings Margaret, Darlene, Josephine and Edward.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm with a 3:30 pm Scripture Service on Monday, April 16, 2018 at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Lansing, Iowa. There will also be a one-hour visitation before mass at the church on Tuesday.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lansing, Iowa with Rev. John Moser as the Celebrant.
Burial with Military Rites will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing, Iowa.
