Gerald “Pete” Meyer, Postville, Iowa, June 2, 2018

Gerald “Pete” Fred Meyer was born January 6, 1939 to Fritz Frederick and Bertha Louise Caroline (Kuhse) Meyer on the family farm south of Postville in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County Iowa. He passed away at Postville Good Samaritan Center with family by his side on June 2, 2018 at the age of 79, following a brief illness. He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Postville on April 23, 1939 and confirmed on April 6, 1952 by Frederick R. Ludwig. He attended the Springfield Country School and Graduated from Postville High School in 1957.

On December 7, 1961 he was drafted into the army and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. On March 3, 1962 he married Sharon Sue Gessner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein, Iowa. After their marriage, they lived in Fort Hood, Texas. He served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was honorably discharged on November 30, 1967 and moved to Postville. While serving in the army he was awarded the driver badge with bar, Marksman (rifle), and Good Conduct Medal.

Pete worked for Marianna LP Gas and Petroleum Corp, Postville, IA and Fauser Energy for 40 years until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of the Postville Fire Department from 1964-1981. He was also a member of the Jim Beam Decanter and Bottle club. During his time, he could always be found finding “Blue Light Specials” on the weekend trips to Oelwein, Whooping up ice cream, and looking for Gock-Gocks. He was busy in his retirement delivering meals on wheels and gardening. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He enjoyed watching RFDTV and listening to country music and The Little Dale Show on Saturday mornings on KNEI. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include brothers: Donald “Doc” Meyer, Postville, Iowa and Frederick ”Fritz” Meyer, Monona, Iowa; Sisters: Joan Plaht, Postville, Iowa, Marlene (Willis) Livingood, Postville, Iowa and Darlene (Harlan) White, Postville, Iowa; Brother-in-law: Dale Resor, Toledo, Iowa; Sisters-in-law: Karen Hanson, Atwater, Minnesota and Janie Gessner, Elk Grove, California; nieces and nephews: Kathryn (Dale) Westendorf, Linda (Donnie) Muchow, Terry (Robin) Meyer, Michael (Linda) Plaht, Randy (Cindy) Plaht, Bradley Plaht, Larry Plaht, Mark Meyer, Bryan Livingood, Brent (Emily) Livingood, Lisa (Bill) Bullerman, Jason (Bridget) White, Sara White, Lori Resor, Alan Resor, Jeff Resor and Cory Hanson; and many great nieces and nephews and extended family.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sharon on January 29, 2009; brothers, Richard (Darlene) Meyer, Harold “Hoot” (Doris) Meyer, Roland “Rolly” Meyer; brothers-in-law, Harvey Plaht, Dean Hanson, Paul Gessner; sister-in-law, Shirley Meyer; niece, Sally Meyer; nephews, Scott Plaht and Donnie Hanson.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, Postville, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before services at the church on Thursday.

Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa with Rev. Lynn Noel as the officiant.

Burial with Military Rites will follow at the Postville Cemetery, Postville, Iowa.
