Virgil Charles LeRoy William Johanningmeier, 89, of Waukon, Iowa died Friday, August 24, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, Iowa. Virgil was born December 5, 1928 to Roy and Viola (Loftsgard) Johanningmeier in Luana, Clayton County, Iowa. He graduated from Postville High School.
Virgil was united in marriage with Betty Jenson on June 25, 1950. To this union three daughters were born. Virgil grew up in Luana and after graduation farmed with his father for ten years. He then started driving truck, which he continued to do for fifty-seven years. For about eight to nine years he owned and operated the Red Baron Bar and Saloon in McGregor, Iowa. Virgil loved his dog, Heidi and cat, Muffin. He enjoyed shucking walnuts in the winter time and playing solitaire on the computer.
Virgil is survived by his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Betty of Waukon, Iowa; three daughters, Linda (Butch) Shaw of Marquette, Iowa, Barb Doyle of Monona, Iowa and Sandra Johanningmeier (fiancé), Shane Kinley) of Waterville, Iowa; grandchildren, Shannon (Andy) Jones, Terry (Vanessa) Picha, Robin (Dan) Larson, Tonya Beck, Jake (Kelly) Shaw, Travis Shaw, Nick Doyle, Jennifer Doyle, Jamie (Aaron) Schroeder, April Boots and Robert Jones; twenty-eight great- grandchildren and five great- great-grandchildren.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Viola Johanningmeier; and two brothers, Carlyn and Merlin.
Celebration of Life will be Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 12-6 pm at the Monona Community Center, Monona, Iowa.
