Ronald Dean Schuety, Elkader, Iowa, January 8, 2019

Ronald Dean Schuety, 76, of Elkader, passed away suddenly Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at home. He was born August 21, 1942, to Emil and Hilda (Lahrs) Schuety, on the family farm, rural St. Olaf, Iowa.

Ron graduated from Elkader High School. While in high school, he worked at the Clayton County Register office, and continued there until he moved to Grinnell and worked for that newspaper. He was united in marriage to Jeannette Hanson on December 12, 1970, at the Ankeny Christian Church. The couple moved to Altoona where he started to work for the Altoona Herald and then the Des Moines Register until his retirement and eventually moved to Des Moines. The couple moved back to Elkader in 2002.

Ron drove a transit van for a number of years after moving to Elkader. He loved being around his family – daughters and grandkids, even though at times he did admit it may have gotten a bit noisy!  Ron attended as many games and events that he could when the grandchildren were participating. He enjoyed playing cards – at Johnson’s or Gene’s Place and he belonged to several card clubs. Ron liked to go to the boat and enjoyed “scratch tickets.” He enjoyed sporting events, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. Every Friday night, Fred Knoke and Ron went out to eat.  Attending events at the Elkader Opera House was another enjoyment. He was very active in his church and Masonic Lodge. Ron always had a smile – he was definitely a social person – He never met a stranger.
