Michael “Mike” Heins, Postville, Iowa, October 8, 2019

Michael “Mike” Heins, 61, of Postville, Iowa died Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at MercyOne Elkader Medical Center in Elkader, Iowa.  Michael Rolan was born February 3, 1958 to Milo and Ursula (Keilig) Heins in Frankfurt, Germany where Milo was stationed in the military and Ursula was a native. He grew up in Postville, Iowa and graduated from Postville High School in 1976.   He excelled in football and track throughout his high school career. Mike proudly joined and served in the United States Army from 1976 to 1979.

Mike was united in marriage with Lisa Szabo on September 1, 1984. Three daughters were born to this union and his family became the center of Mike’s world. He took great pleasure in being “the man behind the scenes”, quietly forming the foundation for his whole family. Mike had the skill and intelligence to fix or build nearly anything he set his mind to, and taught his daughters to do the same. Together with his wife Lisa, Mike loved to travel. The family visited as many museums as they could at each destination, indulging Mike’s passion for history.

His hobbies included H.O. Scale Trains, grilling and farming. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and never missed one of their events. Mike was a quiet, humble and kind man with a surprisingly dry sense of humor. His family will treasure their memories of him as an exceptional husband, father, and grandfather.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Lisa Heins of Postville, Iowa; his daughters, Danielle (David) Straate of Durango, Colorado, Dr. Brittany Heins of New York, New York and Kelsey (Cody) Paulsen of Garner, Iowa; three grandchildren, Kinsley, Cayden and Cashton Paulsen; and his siblings, Dave Heins, Steffen (Jen) Heins and Angela Palma.
