Leo Joseph Schaefers, 93, of McGregor, Iowa died on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, Iowa. Leo was born on December 4, 1926, in Garnavillo, Iowa, to Casper and Mary (Lucher) Schaefers. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church and also attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Garnavillo, Iowa.
Leo spent most of his years as a tiller of the soil on his family farm near McGregor. He spent his days raising beef cattle and growing crops. He always had an interest in being a cowboy and enjoyed many years riding Patches his faithful horse. Leo was an avid storyteller telling about the good ole days and the stories of the land. Leo was stationed in Okinawa, Japan during the Korean war as he served his country honorably. During retirement Leo loved spending most of his time turkey and deer hunting, and riding his UTV with his canine companion Snoop. Leo loved to watch sports especially football and baseball. Last of all Leo was a very faithful man who centered his life around Christ and spent time each day in prayer.
Survivors include his sister, Helen Schaefers, McGregor; special family members, Alex (Teresa) Schaefers, McGregor and their children Tyler (Ashley) Rochleau, Robin (Evan) Landis, Alex Brown, Megan Rochleau, Blake Rochleau, and Logan Brown; nieces and nephews,Evelyn Petsche, Albert (Jean) Petsche, Leonard Petsche, Julie (Jack) Hensley, Carl (Beth) Petsche.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Casper and Mary Schaefers and his siblings, Ray Schaefers, Eldo Schaefers, Anna Mae Schaefers, Bernice Schaefers, Lucille “Sally” Schaefers, Irene Petsche and Betty Schaefers in infancy.
A private Requiem High Mass will be held at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Parish, Seneca, Wisconsin with Rev. Father Nino Molina as the Celebrant.
A burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, McGregor, Iowa with Father John Moser.
