Gladys Harriet Nelson “Khaki”, 92, of West Union, Iowa passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Stoney Brook Village in West Union, Iowa. Gladys “Khaki”, daughter of Harry L. and Helen (Ostlie) Yauslin was born April 14, 1929 in Fayette County, near Clermont, Iowa. She was baptized into the Lutheran Faith at West Clermont Lutheran Church, Clermont, Iowa and confirmed at West Clermont Lutheran Church. Khaki attended Riverside Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Clermont High School. She studied one semester at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
On February 27, 1948, Khaki was united in marriage with William Nelson Jr. at West Clermont Lutheran Church. Two daughters were born to this union. They farmed on the family farm for forty-four years. Khaki helped her husband with their Pioneer Seed Corn Business for thirty years. She worked for Schwann’s in West Union for ten years. They moved to their home in Clermont in 1992.
Khaki was an active member of West Clermont Lutheran Church, where she served on the church council and many different committees. Church was a very important part of her life. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, where she served as chaplain for many years. She was an active member of the Ladies Business and Professional Club, Community Club, Town and Country Club and Red Hat Ladies. Khaki was a charter member of the Pleasant Valley Sports Club, she enjoyed golfing for thirty years. She also enjoyed crocheting, making lefse and other Norwegian specialties. She loved her flowers, bus trips, line dancing and playing cards with friends and family
Surviving Khaki are her daughters, Nancy (Al) Boies of Fayette, Iowa and Susan (Dave) Zimmer of West Union, Iowa; grandchildren, Tiffany (Falb) Kuhens (Antwayn) of West Union, Iowa, Brent (Lori) O’Donnell of Marion, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Trey Kuhens, Tanner Kuhens and Brailey O’Donnell; step-grandchildren, Kellie (Tom) Steffenson, Vance (Michelle) Zimmer, Wendy (Rick) McCarty, Dave “Duke” (Angie) Zimmer, Angela (Troy) Prichett and Brad (Heather) Boies; numerous step-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and numerous special friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sister, Anna; brothers-in-law, Wayne Durscher and William Hitch; son-in-law, Eugene O’Donnell; and many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 10:30 am on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont, Iowa.
Funeral Service will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont, Iowa with Rev. Mike Erickson as the officiant.
Interment will follow at God’s Acres Cemetery in Clermont, Iowa.
