Anna Mae Rothmeyer, Monona, Iowa, April 13, 2022

Anna Mae (Grady) Rothmeyer, 92, of Monona, Iowa passed away at Good Samaritan Society, Postville, Iowa on April 13, 2022. Anna Mae was born October 11,1929 in Monona, Iowa to Edward and Mayme (Geraghty) Grady. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa. She attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School through the 8th grade and graduated from Monona High School in 1947.

Anna Mae was united in marriage to Joseph Rothmeyer on April 16, 1955 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa. To this union 5 children were born, Debora, Joanne, Denise, Mark, and Daniel.

Prior to her marriage, Anna Mae worked at the soda fountain in the dime store in Monona and later as A. N. Busse’s secretary at Monona High School. After her marriage she became an integral part of the family farming operation. Working side by side with Joe, they milked cows, raised hogs and chickens, planted and harvested crops.  She also tended a large garden, made amazing homemade bread, pickled beets, and “cookie bug” (Tollhouse) cookies. Following their move to town in 1987, Anna Mae spent some of her new-found spare time cleaning St. Patrick’s Church.

Anna Mae loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. No visit was complete without a round of “Hide the Thimble” or “Pass the Pigs”. Anna Mae cherished her Irish heritage and she also loved doing needlework, quilting, playing cards, collecting bells, sharing stories and volunteering whenever she was needed.

Anna Mae was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Rosary Society/Service Society. She was a member of the Gooding Better Neighbors Club and the Monona Heritage Club.

Survivors include her children, Debora (Paul) Hayes, Joanne (Wes) Wilker, Denise Rothmeyer, Mark (Cathy) Rothmeyer, Daniel (Diane) Rothmeyer; grandchildren, Megan (Guy) Buonincontro, Britney Hayes, Matthew Hayes, Christina Wilker, Joe Wilker, Fr. Austin Wilker, Matthew (Sheniah) Rothmeyer, Michael (Olivia) Rothmeyer, Patricia Rothmeyer, Kaitlyn (Burke) Schrader and John Rothmeyer. Great-grandchildren Morgan Wilker, Brooke Wilker, Jinora Rothmeyer, Harper Rothmeyer, Penelope Rothmeyer, Emersyn Schrader and Logan Schrader; her sister, Catherine Fick, sister-in-law, Roberta Grady and many nieces and nephews.

Anna Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, her parents, and brothers Edward Grady and Tom Grady.

A Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a 4:30 pm Rosary on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Monona, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before mass time at the church on Thursday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa with Father Austin Wilker and Father Chris Podhajsky con-celebrating.

Burial will follow at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Monona, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Camp Courageous or the MFL Ambulance Fund.
