Jere Gene Probert, 86, of Wadena, Iowa died Sunday, June 12, 2022 at the Hiawatha Care Center in Hiawatha, Iowa. Jere Probert was born June 20, 1935 in Wadena, Iowa. He joined an older brother, William Frank Probert as the only children of William Vincent Probert and Verna Verneta Zephora Taubman Probert. He was raised a fourth generation Probert on the farm in Highland Township in Clayton County, Iowa.
The beginning of his formal education was as a five year-old in a Highland Township one-room schoolhouse (The Peterman School). That led through the Wadena Public School, an Associate Degree from Iowa State University and concluded with a Bachelor of Science degree from Upper Iowa University at fifty years of age.
Jere and Beverly Kay Hokel were married in 1960. They were to be blessed with three children: Lisa Ann (Roger) Settje, Denise Carol Probert and Stephen Peter (Naomi) Probert. The passing of time brought eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
After serving in the Army from 1956-1958, he returned to the home farm with his parents. Jere continued to farm full-time for the next thirty years. That was followed by four years as a family development specialist with Iowa State Extension, working with farm families still recovering from the farm crisis of the 1980’s. He finished his career with a ten-year stint as director of a seven county area Northeast Iowa Family Development and Self-Sufficiency program under the umbrella of Northeast Iowa Community Action Corp.
Jere was pleased and honored to have served on the board of directors of the Valley C.E.W. Community School District and the Keystone Area Education Agency #1.
In November of 1972, upon committing all of his time, all of his talent and all of his resources to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, he found his love of the land and livestock suddenly coming in a distant fourth behind love of his Savior, love of his family, and love of people.
Jere was always willing to share the love of Christ which had transformed him. In addition to writing several books, he served as a teacher at the Midwest Mission Bible Training Center, as well as other places. For many years he ministered to families with his bride, Beverly. They were always ready to listen and love.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials in Jere’s honor may be given to the Midwest Mission Bible Training Center in Cresco, Iowa.
