Roger William Henkes, 93, died Thursday June 16, 2022 at Odelia Healthcare in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Roger was born December 16, 1928, the third of four sons to Albert and Laura (Klasen) Henkes at home in Monona Township. He attended Clayton County Rural Schools and graduated in 1947 from Monona Iowa Public School.
He married Marilyn Fishel on November 29, 1952 and had two children, Pamela and Scott. They later divorced. Roger was a farmer and owned a trucking business until 197 5 when he purchased the East Side Pub in Monona. He later went on to own the Heidelberg Supper Club in Luana, the Monona Motel, and the Prairie Du Chien Locker. He moved to New Mexico in 1985 where he resided until his death.
He worked various jobs in New Mexico until he retired at age 90 from filling propane tanks due to health issues. He loved to attend the Moose Lodge Albuquerque and made many friends there especially Roger, Paula and Howard.
The family is grateful for the excellent care he received the last two and a half years at Odelia Healthcare in Albuquerque. It became his home and the staff his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Kenneth, Harlan, and Curtis; and three nieces, Colleen, Crystal, and Corinne.
Surviving Roger are his children, Pam (Sid) Mills of North Liberty, Iowa and Scott Henkes of Farmersburg, Iowa; four grandchildren, Nick (Tasha) Henkes of Monona, Iowa, Ashley Mills of North Liberty, Iowa, Cody (Morgan) Henkes of Monona, Iowa and Tara (Logan) Dumolien of Coggon, Iowa; six-great grandchildren, Bentley, Mavrik and Colt Henkes (Cody’s), Bo and Maxine Henkes (Nick’s), Lukas Mills (Ashley’s); and a niece, Cheri Huff of Farmersburg, Iowa.
A private family ceremony will be held at a later date.
Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa is helping the family with the arrangements.
