Dixie Jo Johnson, 86, of Luana, Iowa died Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at her home surrounded by family. Dixie was born January 11, 1936 to Joe and Vivian (Ingels) Land in Luana, Iowa. She was baptized March 18, 1940 at the Methodist Parsonage and confirmed at Luana Methodist Church. Dixie attended school in Luana and was active in basketball, band, and glee club. Dixie loved horses and rode them after school in both summer and winter. She graduated from Luana High School in 1954 and went to work at Wilkes Grocery until she was married.
On June 1, 1958, Dixie was united in marriage with Kenneth Johnson at the Luana Methodist Church in Luana, Iowa. Together Dixie and Ken continued their love of horses and were members of the Whistling Bit Saddle Club, and the Flying Hoof Quadrille, a club that square danced on horses. In 1962 they took over the family dairy farm north of Luana. Along with raising 5 children Dixie was an active farm wife taking care of the calves, driving the baler and chopper during harvest (where she only tipped the wagon over three times). Dixie was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church where she served on WELCA as well as several terms on the church council.
Surviving Dixie are her five children, Kevin (Karen) Johnson of Dodgeville, Wisconsin, Deb (Keith) Hanson of Clermont, Iowa, Keith (Sherri) Johnson of Luana, Iowa, Kert (Amy) Johnson of Coralville, Iowa and Kathy (Glen) Ohloff of Castalia, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren, Kelsey, Tyler, Nicholas, Megan, Abby, Jake, MacKenzie, Garret, Zach, Isaiah, Elena, Jess, and Shalee; three great-grandchildren, Jackson, Brynleigh and Walker; her sister-in-law, JoAnn Meyer and many nieces and nephews.
Dixie was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Johnson on May 12, 1989; parents, Joe and Vivian Land; step-father, Ole Ruckhaber; brother, Keith Land; sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Phil Hartley; son-in-law, Scott Eberling; father and mother-in-law, Helmer and Myrtle Johnson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marjorie and Earling Fosaaen, Arnold Johnson, Howard and LuVerne Johnson, Alice and Ahlert Anfinson, Arlene and Morris Nelson, and Jerome Meyer.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, September 30, 2022 at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, Iowa. There will also be a one-hour visitation before services at the church on Saturday.
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, Iowa with Vicar Jeremey Wolfe as the officiant.
Inurnment will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Luana, Iowa.
