Mary Francis Grimes, 101, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2022 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Mary was born on July 21, 1921 in Fullerton, Louisiana to James Elmo Richard and Minnie Beatrice Hayes Richard.
Mary graduated from DeRidder High School in 1939 and went to McNeese State University in Lake Charles. She married Gerald J. Grimes on May 15, 1946 and moved to his hometown in Iowa. She wrote poetry and was published in several newspapers. Mary and her husband taught ballroom dancing for several years. She returned to Louisiana twenty years ago. She joined a Poetry Group at Centenary College and was active in a Bible Study Group at her apartment complex.
Left to cherish Mary’s memory is her daughter, Stephanie Grimes; granddaughters, Chavonne Lout and Nichole Grimes; and great-grandchildren, Isabella Lout and William Lout. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald (Tucker) Grimes; and son, Stephen Allen Grimes.
The family would like to express special thanks to the St. Joseph Carpenter House Hospice for the excellent care and compassion given to Mary.
A visitation will be held on Monday, October 10, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home in West Union, Iowa.
Interment will follow at West Union City Cemetery at 3:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to the charity of their choice.
