Laverne “Vern”Walvatne, Elgin, Iowa, November 13, 2022

Laverne “Vern” Telmer Walvatne, 81 of Elgin, Iowa died Sunday, November 13, 2022 at Gundersen Palmer Hospital in West Union, Iowa. He was born February 17, 1941 to Palmer and Merna (Jermeland) Walvatne in West Union, Iowa. Vern attended West Union Schools.

On April 4, 1964, Vern was united in marriage with Deanna Dumer in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Four children were born to this union. Throughout the years Vern worked at Altsadt and Langlas- Kleen Maid Bread Company in Waterloo, Iowa, as a C.N.A. at the Lutheran Home, cook at Happy Chef and as a janitor at Sacred Heart. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Clermont, Iowa and Sacred Heart Parish in Waterloo, Iowa. He belonged to the Elgin’s Lions Club. Vern enjoyed going to the Iowa Hawkeye football games, golfing, fishing, watching westerns and having coffee with friends.

Surviving Vern are his wife, Deanna Walvatne of Elgin, Iowa; his children Jane (Barry) Armstrong of Waterloo, Iowa, Neil (Colleen L.) Walvatne of Waterloo, Iowa, Kent (Barb) Walvatne of Waterloo, Iowa and Richard (Colleen A.) Walvatne of Waverly, Iowa; grandchildren, Ursula Felix, Isabella (Kyle) Maclay, Destany Walvatne, Devon Walvatne, Lily Walvatne, Brady Walvatne, Madison ( Austin) Durscher and Rachel Walvatne; great grandchildren, Adan Walvatne and Theodore Durscher; two sisters, Janice Killian of Independence, Missouri and Judy Sigafoos of West Union, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Palmer and Merna Walvatne; and his three brothers, Norris, Kenneth and Stanley Walvatne.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Elgin, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before mass at the church on Friday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Friday, November 18, 2022 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Clermont, Iowa with Rev. Ralph Davis as the celebrant.
