John H. Nikolai, rural Elkader, Iowa, February 12, 2023

  John H Nikolai, born in 1940 in Moline, Illinois, passing away at home suddenly at age 82; he is survived by his beloved wife Mary Fran of 56 years, their children Timothy, Kenneth, Patrick and daughter-in-law Brenda, brother Robert, Nieces and Nephews Cathy and Jim Marks, Teresa Buchholz, Peggy and Rich Kuhlman, David and Kate, Phillip and Maggie, and many great nieces and nephews. Preceded in passing by his parents, Joseph and Martha and Sister-in-Law Susan.

John was a dedicated husband of 56 years, a role model for his sons and closest family and friends and a hard worker. Since moving to Elkader many years ago, John has given back to the community in many roles including the church, Knights of Columbus, Motor Mill Foundation, The American Legion, reading to others at the care center, as well as being involved in Veterans affairs. These activities kept him busy but he never forgot to send letters and cards to family and friends

In lieu of flowers and cards, the family suggests that memorials be directed to the Motor Mill Foundation to continue his passion and energy rebuilding a local historical monument. He has been President for many years and was proud of this endeavor.

Visitation: 9am – until Mass time on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at the church.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, Iowa with Rev. John Haugen as Celebrant.

Inurnment with Military Honors: St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa
