Colleen Vargason, West Branch, Iowa formerly of Elgin, Iowa, July 4, 2023

Colleen A. Vargason, 84, of West Branch, Iowa formerly of Elgin, Iowa went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa.  Colleen was born February 21, 1939 in Fayette, Iowa, the daughter of the late Lawrence Howard and Robert and Grace (Peters) Kerr.

Colleen was a graduate of Elgin High School, class of 1956.  On Feb. 16, 1960, Colleen was united in marriage to Robert Vargason in Preston, Minnesota, and three children were born to this union.

Colleen cherished her family and friends, especially ones met through Illyria Community Church and West Branch United Methodist Church, she treasured memories made with her grandkids and great-grandkids. She spent several years traveling to Texas after retirement. Colleen enjoyed crafting, sewing, quilting and playing games whether that be on her computer or card games with family.  Colleen had a strong faith and relationship with the Lord and will be welcomed with open arms.

Colleen is survived by her children, Clint Vargason (Margie) of West Branch, Lori Hosier (Moe) of West Branch, and Scott Vargason (Skyla) of West Branch; step-children, Bobby Vargason Jr. of Florida and Nancy (Royce) Penhollow of Oelwein, twelve grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sisters, Karolyn Moritz of Elgin, Iowa, and Lois Wickett (Dick) of Clive, Iowa; a brother, Willie (Yvonne) Kerr of Clermont, Iowa; sister-in-law, Mildred Anderson (Leo) of Donna, Texas; sister-in-law, Margaret Vargason of Weslaco, Texas, and several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents, Robert and Grace Kerr and Lawrence Howard; brother, Sonny Kerr; sister, Delores Meyer, sister-in-law, Katie Kerr; brothers-in-law, Harlo Meyers,  Jim Vargason, Delbert Vargason, Charles Vargason, and Art Anderson; son-in-law, David Hosier and a granddaughter, Erika Hempstead.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 9, 2023 from 3-6 pm at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elgin, Iowa and also one hour before services at the church on Monday.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am on Monday, July 10, 2023 at Illyria Community Church, rural Elgin, Iowa with Pastor Pam Reinig as the officiant.

Burial will follow at Illyria Cemetery, rural Elgin, Iowa

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date for friends and family in West Branch, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Colleen’s name.
