LaVon Leona Kottman, 96, passed away September 12, 2024. LaVon was born on September 2, 1928, in Maynard, Iowa to John and Leona (Sass) Froning. She was baptized October 15, 1928 by Rev. Daugs at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa. On April 18, 1943, she was confirmed by Rev. Flesner at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, Iowa.
After graduating from Monona High School in 1946, she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and Upper Iowa University in Fayette. LaVon taught six years in the Clayton County rural schools and 27 years at MFL, retiring in 1994. She taught Sunday School, was a member of the church Bible Study, a member of the Monona Woman’s Club and also the Book Discussion Group.
On June 15, 1949, LaVon was united in marriage to Harland Kottman by Rev. Schleuter at St. Paul Lutheran Church Monona, Iowa. To this union three daughters were born, Sheila, Julie and Lisa. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed her 33 years of teaching and later volunteering in elementary classes to enrich the goals of our future leaders. She enjoyed spending winter months in Florida or Texas, a trip to countries surrounding Switzerland and summer vacations at Osage Beach and the Black Hills.
Survivors include two daughters, Julie Wiedenmann and Lisa (Dave) Wille, six grandchildren, Craig Martins, Blane (Laura) Martins, Jamie (Lonnie) Lightfoot, Allyssa (Scott) Kohnert, Stephanie (Jed) Jones, and Andrew Wille, twelve great-grandchildren, Brendan, Cecelia, Claire Martins, Caden Stuckman (Abbie), Carter and Cael Lightfoot, Reese, Camryn, Brecken Kohnert, Evelyn, Walkeen, Whitaker Jones, one great-great grandchild, Emersyn Stuckman and sister, Donna Cooper, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, daughter, Sheila Wendel, brothers-in-law, Richard Cooper and Gary Kottman, and sister-in-law, Sharon Kottman.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am with a visitation from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Monday, September 16, 2024 at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home in Monona, Iowa with Rev. Marshall Hahn as the officiant.
Interment will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Monona, Iowa.
