Mary Lou Thompson, Monona, Iowa, September 22, 2024

Mary Lou (Levenhagen) Thompson, 92 of Monona, Iowa passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at Good Samaritan Home in Waukon, Iowa.  Mary Lou was born on April 3, 1932, on the family farm near Suttle Creek, to Paul and Julia (Scannel) Levenhagen. She attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Monona High School with the class of 1950.

Mary Lou was united in marriage to Virgil Thompson on January 13, 1951, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa. Five children were born to this union. Mary Lou and Virgil farmed outside Monona until moving into town. Mary Lou was the head cook for Food Services at MFL school in Monona until retiring. Mary Lou enjoyed playing cards, dancing, cooking, and working crossword puzzles.

Mary Lou is survived by five children: Jean (Bruce} Glen-Walker of Panama City Beach, FL; Larry (Liane} Thompson of Monona, IA; James Thompson of Monona, IA; Mary (Robert} Sass of Luana, IA; Jackie Thompson (Ron Cosby) of Prairie du Chien, WI; seventeen grandchildren; thirty great- grandchildren; one great-great grandson and two great-great granddaughters; brother-in-law, Bill Petermeier of Elk River, MN; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Barbara Thompson of Monona, Iowa; sisters-in-law Karen Severn of Roscoe IL and Bonnie Thompson of La Porte City IA. Mary Lou is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband Virgil; parents, Paul and Julia Levenhagen; two brothers, Father Robert Levenhagen and James Levenhagen; three sisters, Francis Apfel, Betty Jean Lawson, and Anna Mae Petermeier; and one grandson, Dallas Thompson.

A Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before mass at the church on Monday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Monday, September 30, 2024 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa with Rev. Martin Coolidge and Rev. Nils de Jesus Hernandez as the Celebrants.

Interment will follow at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Monona, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church building fund or Monona Fire Department.
