Arnold Rae Gibbs, West Union, Iowa, November 5, 2024

Arnold Rae Gibbs, 95 of West Union, Iowa passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at Stoney Brook in West Union, Iowa.

Arnold and his dad Rae went to Fritz Vagts farm in Eldorado as Rae was in the market for Chester White breeding stock.  While looking at the pigs, Darlene walked by on her way home from teaching school…..

He was united in marriage with Darlene Elizabeth Vagts April 22, 1951 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Eldorado, Iowa.  To this union five children were born.

Together they started farming near Strawberry Point where their dairy herd consisted of Guernsey cows that Arnold had bought, raised and exhibited in high school. A few years later they rented a farm east of West Union then in 1960 they bought a farm two miles east down the road which became the home farm.  Through the years they expanded the dairy and the hogs and built many buildings and made improvements to the farm.  Arnold and Darlene retired from the farm in 1991 and moved to “Easy Street” in West Union.  They travelled in their retirement years with Darlene’s sister Ardath and husband Clarence “Buzz” Cannon to Arizona, cruised to Alaska and went on many “Bank” trips.

Surviving Arnold are two children, Mary Gibbs (Brian) of Hiawatha, Iowa and Mike (Cindy) Gibbs of Waterville, Iowa; daughters-in-law, Audrey Gibbs and Carol Gibbs; son-in-law, Russ Medberry; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-eight great-grandchildren; and his sister, Barbara (Thom) Borchert of Sioux City, Iowa.

Arnold was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Gibbs on June 12, 2018; daughter, Sue Medberry; and sons, Jon Gibbs and Gary Gibbs.

A Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, November 11, 2024 at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union, Iowa.

Funeral Service will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union, Iowa with Rev. Isaiah Stansbery as the officiant.

Interment will follow at St. Peter Kirchof Cemetery in Eldorado, Iowa.
