Buddy Slaughter Sr., 95, of McGregor, Iowa, passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Buddy was born September 5, 1930, in Garnavillo, Iowa, to Jess and Geneva (Moore) Slaughter. When he was young, the family moved to McGregor, where he helped his parents at their Trading Post. He also worked at a gas station near his home alongside his twin brother, Bill.
Buddy graduated from McGregor High School and went on to work at the Genoa Lock and Dam as a mechanic. He later worked on the railroad bridge in Marquette, and then for the mail service in Elkader, where he met the love of his life, Shelby Holden.
In 1949, Buddy purchased his lifelong residence in McGregor. On August 21, 1955, he was united in marriage with Shelby, and together they were blessed with four children. In 1956, they moved into their home, and Buddy began working part-time at Valley Small Engines in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. In 1971, he became the owner and operator of Bud’s Repair, where his well-known greeting, “Bud here,” became a familiar comfort to many. He provided wrecker and flatbed services and was always willing to lend a hand to those in need.
Buddy was deeply devoted to his family and lived his faith in the Lord with sincerity and strength. He was active in his community and spent many years involved in Boy Scouts as a troop leader. He cherished time spent racing stock cars—#10—with his two sons and his brother, Butch. He also loved going on Jeep “muck runs” and made countless memories enjoying the outdoors and good company.
Buddy will be remembered for his generosity, his work ethic, his unwavering faith, and the love he showed to his family, friends, and community.
Surviving Bud are three of his children; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Shelby; son Buddy John, Jr. and his parents, Jess and Geneva Slaughter; siblings, Claire, Bill Jim, Scotti “Butch”, Daniel, Lullabell, Bernice and Emmajean.
