
Sandra Kay Berger, 76 of Volga, Iowa passed away Saturday, December 27, 2025 at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood, Iowa. Sandra was born October 2, 1949 to Lloyd and Kathleen (Bissell) Bente in Elkader, Iowa. Sandy graduated from Central Community High School in 1967 and attended Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar.
On July 20, 1968, Sandy was united in marriage with James Berger. Three children were born to this union. Sandy had a diverse and dedicated career in the medical field, serving in several roles over the years. From a nurse’s aide to an EMT, operating room technician, and eventually a medical record technician. She also served as president of the Volga Legion Auxiliary and as secretary for the Volga Methodist Church. She held several offices within the TOPS organization, was a member of the SAFE Coalition Group, served on the panel for NICC handicap workers, and participated in a bowling league for ten years.
Surviving Sandy are her children, Brian Berger (Cindy Rigdon) of Volga, Iowa, Matthew Berger (Heidi Dettman ) of Elkader, Iowa, Sarah (Jim) Fettkether of Ryan, Iowa; her grandchildren, Brianna (Kyle) Young, David Gibbons, Michael Berger, Brinan Berger, Bailey (Caleb) Gossman, Aaron (Claire) Berger, Isaac Fettkether, Tate Fettkether and Hunter Berger; three great-grandchildren Andrew Gibbons, Keegan Young, and James Berger; siblings and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Sandy in death was her husband, James Berger on July 22, 1997; parents, Lloyd and Kathleen Bente; parent-in-laws Howard and Eula Berger, sister, Carol Koppes, and brother and sister-in laws Edward DeShaw, Dwight Rodas, Denny Koppes, Kim Berger, Janice and Ken Newman, Kurt Haynes, and niece Danielle Pape.
Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm with a visitation from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Friday, January 2, 2026, at the Volga United Methodist Church in Volga, Iowa with Rev. Margaret Yackel-Juleen as the Officiant.
Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Volga, Iowa.
The family would like to invite all family and friends to join them at the St. Paul Lutheran Church Community Center in Volga, IA following the services for a social luncheon.
