
David Orville Kalkwarf, 77 of McGregor, Iowa passed away from Alzheimer’s on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at Meadow View Memory Care in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. David was born October 7, 1948 to Orville and Hazel (Voss) Kalkwarf in Madison, Wisconsin. He graduated from Pontiac High School with the class of 1966 and attended Wartburg College for two years before joining the United States Army. When David returned from serving in the Army he continued his education at the Illinois State College and graduated with a CPA certificate in accounting.
On November 28, 1969, David was united in marriage with Barbara Augsburger at the First Lutheran Church in Pontiac, Illinois. Two children were born to this union. David was employed as the Administrator for the Marion Water Department for 32 years. David was an avid Sportsman, his passion was bird hunting, it was what drew him to Northeast Iowa back in the 1970’s. He loved his hunting dogs and always had them as hunting companions. He was proud to be a Charter Member of the Iowa National Ruffed Grouse Society.
He was fascinated with pipe organs as well as a variety of music genres. His stereo system provided him with hours of listening to his collection of vinyl records, cassette tapes and CDs.
David is survived by his wife, Barbara Kalkwarf of McGregor, Iowa; his children, Michael (Nicole) Kalkwarf of Pella, Iowa and Anna (Raleigh Dow) Buckmaster of Bozeman, Montana;
grandchildren, Isaac, Caleb and Abby Kalkwarf and Mia and Connor Buckmaster; siblings, Paul (Elaine) Kalkwarf, Mark Kalkwarf and Ruth Kirchner-Sepich; siblings-in-law, Teresa (Neil) Ulrich and Sheila (Kyle) Zehr; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding David in death were his parents, Orville and Hazel Kalkwarf; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Delbert and Betty Jo Augsburger; and sibling in-laws David and Leanna Augsburger and Mark Augsburger.
A Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, May 8, 2026 at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Monona, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before services at the church on Saturday.
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa with Rev. Erika Lenth as the officiant.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be sent to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa or Meadow View Memory Care in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Inurnment will be held on July 25, 2026 at Center Cemetery in Flanagan, Illinois. Graveside service with military rites will be held at 11:00 a.m. with a picnic potluck following at the Flanagan Legion Park.
