An avid outdoorsman, hunter, trapper, and fisherman, he often provided for his parents at a young age, living off nature’s bounty, by hunting, fishing, trapping game and digging ginseng.
He started his working career on the family farm, and then worked for Mobile Oil on the Mississippi River transporting fuel to the “Gulf of America” and back. He was in line to be a Barge Captain but decided to return to the family farm and continue doing what he loved.
His farming operation included raising grain and livestock, and in his spare time he operated a family sawmill; cut, logged and produced his own lumber which he used to make cabinets and doors and remodeled his home with intricate woodwork.
