Sandra Kay Hakert, 82, of Elkader, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the Elkader Care Center.
Sandra was born July 14, 1944, in Elkader, the daughter of Edward and Blanche (Bailey) Burlingame. She graduated from Central Community High School (Elkader) with the Class of 1962. Sandra worked for many years at Central State Bank, where she later retired.
Sandra was blessed with daughters Carolyn and Kim from her marriage to William Frey. In 1984, she married Carl Hakert, and his children, Karla and Deron, became a cherished part of her family. Sandra and Carl shared many years together until his passing on October 13, 2019.
Sandra’s greatest joy was her family, and she especially treasured her nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her sweet, kind nature and a laugh that everyone loved.
Sandra’s faith was central to her life. She loved music and playing the piano, and she enjoyed reading, playing cards, mysteries and watching Caitlin Clark.
Survivors include her daughters, Carolyn Olsen and Kim (Dean) Lee; her son, Deron Hakert; her grandchildren, Tanner (Jessica) Hakert, Olivia Lee, Addie Lee, Jack Hrovatin, Lily Hrovatin and Gavin Lee; her great-grandson, Cooper Hakert; and her brother, Gary (Gloria) Burlingame.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; her daughter, Sue Frey, in infancy; her stepdaughter, Karla Hakert; and her brothers, John and Bob Burlingame.
Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, October 2, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in East Side Cemetery in Elkader.
The family is deeply grateful to the staff at the Elkader Care Center, who cared for Sandra with such warmth and dedication. Their kindness meant more than words can say. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Elkader Care Center.
