Verla married Clarence Van Wey on November 2, 1968. They had one stillborn son, Neal. They moved to Missouri and later divorced. She married William “Bill” Walker and they were together for over 35 years. They were quite the crafting team. They had embroidery machines that Bill was the master of, Verla made lots of animals, animal blankets and many other crafts using Bill’s creations. They also had a donut shop, a video shop, made and painted ceramics. Verla worked as a bookkeeper, cashier and her last job was a stocker at Walmart. Verla loved to play cards, Hearts, Sheepshead and Pinochle were some of her favorites.
Following Bill’s death on March 23, 2022, Verla’s family moved her to Garden View Place in Monona, Iowa. She was there for over four years and was recently moved to Ossian Care Center where she died on November 1, 2026 after suffering with dementia for over 12 years.
Verla is survived by her sister, Anita Schlitter; her brother, Lester (Jan) Baade; her brother-in-laws, Jim Walker, John (Shirley) Walker and a step-daughter, Beth and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Bill; parents, Merrill and Leona; brother Donald (Christine) Baade; brother-in-law, Eugene Schlitter; and niece, Michelle Kruger.
A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2026 at 1:30 pm at Postville Cemetery, Postville, Iowa with Rev. Beth Hurt as the officiant.
