William “Bill” Oscar Possehl, Monona, Iowa, April 3, 2023

William “Bill” Oscar Possehl, of Monona, Iowa died April 3, 2023 at The Elkader Care Center. Bill was born May 16, 1931 to Rudy and Rosalyn (Frieden) Possehl at the home farm near Elkader, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Bill attended Boardman Township Country School and graduated from Elkader High School in 1948.

During the Korean War, Bill served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1955. He served at Tongue Pt, Astoria, OR, San Diego, CA and Hawaii. He worked on the USS Nereus AS17 submarine repair ship Pacific Fleet. Bill was honorably discharged as a Petty Officer 3rd Class.

Bill was united in marriage to Elaine Drahn of Monona on February 8, 1953 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona. To this union two children were born, Wendy and Steven. Bill and Elaine built a new house in Monona where they lived for 53 years. He spent almost all of his working years in the Plumbing & Heating – Air Conditioning field and retired in 1993. With Elaine, he enjoyed traveling and spent 19 winters in Brownsville, TX.

In Monona, Bill served in many organizations. He was on the Monona Fire Department for 27 years, Monona City Council for seven years, Tri City Golf Club President and an American Legion member. Bill was a charter member and President of the MFL Booster Club, charter member of Monona Jaycees, active in church and a scout leader starting the Webelos program. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Activities Bill enjoyed included fishing, golfing, bowling, dancing to polka and waltz music and gardening. Their property was chosen Yard of the Month. He refinished many antique furniture pieces and was a very good handyman for fixing things.

William Possehl is survived by his wife, Elaine. They enjoyed 70 years together. He is also survived by daughter Wendy (Scott) Evert of Holmen, WI. and son Steven (Emma) Possehl of Princeton, IA; grandchildren Heather (Andrew Shallue) Evert of Bloomington, IL, Brian (Megan) Evert of Edmonds, WA, Dennis (Carrie) Evert of Edina, MN, Paul (Mallory) Possehl of Comanche, IA and Joel Possehl of Princeton, IA; great grandchildren Adelyn and Cameron Evert, Etta and Ellis Evert; brothers Floyd (Janice) Possehl of Elkader and Rudy (Donna) Possehl of Goodyear, AZ; sister-in-laws Dolores Olds of Monona, Amber Possehl of Eau Claire, WI, Joyce Drahn of Decorah, IA, Carolyn Drahn of Noblesville, IN, brother-in-law John Moderwell of Gages Lake, IL.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Rudy and Rosalyn Possehl, brother Rollin Possehl and sister-in-law Dorothy Possehl.

A Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 11:00 am with a Memorial Service at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Faith Lutheran Church, Monona, Iowa with Rev. Mel Harris as the officiant.

Burial will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Monona, Iowa.

Memorials will be given to Monona Ambulance Service and Faith Lutheran Church.
