Vergean Mae Schmidt 83 of Farmersburg, Iowa died Friday April 21, 2017 at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, Iowa. Vergean M. Freitag was born April 18, 1934 in Elkader. She was the daughter of Glendor and Vera (Breitsprecher) Freitag. She received her education in Elkader, graduating from Elkader High School with the class of 1951. On September 8, 1953, she was united in marriage to Carl Schmidt at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader.
Vergean worked as a telephone operator in Elkader, was the school cook at the Farmersburg School for twelve years and did day care out of her home. When not busy with work she enjoyed baking, fishing, camping, gardening and playing cards, she belonged to multiple card clubs. Her favorite pastime was playing Euchre and Pinochle and spending time with her Red Hat Club. She was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Survivors include one daughter, Teresa (Brian) Eilers of Luana; one son, Tim (Nancy) Schmidt of Ellenton, Florida; five grandchildren, Chris, Brandon, Kyle, Tyler and Jacob; two great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Vincent and one brother, Ivan Freitag of Elkader.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl in 2003, a son Terry and a sister, Marilyn Unruh.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday April 24, 2017 at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg. The Rev. Harold McMillin will officiate.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m., Sunday, April 23, 2017 at the Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Monona and one hour before services at the church on Monday.
Interment will be at Farmersburg-Wagner Cemetery in Farmersburg, Iowa.
