Janet Winter, 80, of Postville, Iowa died Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society, Postville, Iowa. Janet Marlene was born on January 28, 1937 in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Gerard and Frances (Thompson) Van Houweling. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Oskaloosa, Iowa and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Clermont, Iowa. Janet graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1957 and attended Central College in Pella, Iowa, William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa and Upper Iowa College in Fayette, Iowa.
Janet was united in marriage with Marvin Winter on July 11, 1959 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Clermont, Iowa. She taught school for two years in Postville, Iowa, one year in Waukon, Iowa and substitute taught in Postville, Iowa for twelve years. Janet also worked as a lab tech at Swiss Valley for nineteen years and retired in 1996. She enjoyed reading, puzzle making, traveling, visiting with her children, grandchildren, sisters and brother, crocheting and entertaining whenever possible.
Janet is survived by her husband, Marvin Winter of Postville, Iowa; three children, Michael (Paula) Winter of Rock Island, Illinois, Jolynn (Brad) Moshner of Portland, Oregon and Joann (Jeff) Matt of Bettendorf, Iowa; three grandchildren Jericho (Kyle Stephens) Winter, Keegan Matt and Pierce Matt; siblings, Geraldine Tow, Sherrill Cleveland, Carolyn (William) Norris and Gerard Anthony (Kathleen) Van Houweling.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Gerard and Frances Van Houweling; one grandson, Jackson Moshner; and two brothers-in-law, Max Tow and William Cleveland.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am on Friday, May 5, 2017 at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Postville, Iowa with Rev. Nils de Jesus Hernandez as the Celebrant. There will also be a one hour visitation from 10:00 am to 11:00 am before services at the church on Friday.
Inurnment will follow at Postville Cemetery, Postville, Iowa.
