Thomas “Dave” David Katsumes, 79, of Elgin, Iowa died Saturday, March 14, 2026 at his home in Elgin. He was born December 29, 1946 to William Theodore and Carol Joan (Ritchey) Katsumes, Sr. in Keokuk, Iowa. Dave graduated from Keokuk Senior High School and served in the United States Navy for four years.
He graduated from Drake Law School, first joined the Antes and Beeghly Law Firm in West Union, Iowa, then maintained a solo private practice in Elgin for many years, working alongside one loyal secretary. He lived a life defined by dedication to his family, his community, and the people he served. In addition to serving as City Attorney for Elgin, Hawkeye, Arlington, and Wadena at various times, he was deeply committed to his work as a defense attorney and was especially passionate about advocating for children as a guardian ad litem. Known for his steady presence, fairness, and unwavering commitment to helping others, he earned the respect of clients and colleagues alike.
Dave was united in marriage with Carol Stuart. One daughter, Emily was born to this union. They later divorced. Dave and Tammy Torkelson were united in marriage on June 30, 2007.
Outside the office and into retirement, he found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved bowling, golfing, fishing, reading, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals, traveling to Florida, and relaxing with a cold Bud Light in hand. Perhaps most memorable was his love of telling stories—lots of them—which brought laughter and connection to everyone around him.
Above all, he adored his grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy. Time spent with them was among his greatest treasures.
Dave is survived by his wife, Tammy; his daughter, Emily (Steven) Beard; step-children, Nicole (Josh) Kelley and Matthew (Shauna) Roling; three grandchildren, Esaias and Brielle Beard and Harper Roling; sister, Karen (Dave) Johnson; parents-in-law, William Torkelson and Susan (Ted) Hughes; sisters-in-law, Pam Katsumes and Renae (Kevin) Lembke and brother-in-law, Scott (Julie) Torkelson; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William Theodore Katsumes, Jr.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for Saturday, April 25, 2026 at the Elgin Legion Hall, Elgin, Iowa.
